Sodium Olivate

Sodium Olivate is saponified olive oil.

What it does in soap
Sodium olivate produces a gentle, conditioning soap with a stable but low lather. It contributes mild cleansing and helps create a bar that’s well tolerated by sensitive skin.

What it feels like on skin
Soaps high in sodium olivate feel smooth and non-drying. The lather is creamy and subtle rather than bubbly.

Why it’s used
Olive oil has a long history in soapmaking because it’s reliable and skin-friendly. It helps moderate more cleansing oils in a formula and improves overall mildness. Bars with a high olive oil content benefit from longer curing, which improves hardness and performance over time.

Common questions

  • Is this the same as Castile soap? Castile soap is traditionally made with 100% olive oil. Sodium olivate may also appear as part of a blended formula.

  • Does it make soap slimy? Poorly cured olive-oil-heavy soaps can feel slippery. Proper formulation and curing prevent this.

  • Is this vegan? Yes. Sodium olivate is plant-derived.
